Space&Rock has been steadily growing momentum for the past year. When we first started talking about it, people really responded. The wedding community around us suddenly got very excited and we decided that perhaps we ought to take the idea a little further and see where it went.
The more market research we did, the more we realised there was a huge demand for the sort of site Space&Rock was proposing to bring to the wedding industry. In autumn 2016 we met with a brilliant team of web designers and put together the bare bones of what Space&Rock will become. The rest is now down to funding to bring Space&Rock to life.
Our Crowdfunding page isn’t live yet. We are giving it 8 weeks to raise the huge £10,000 needed to create this amazing site and launch Space&Rock. It’s important for now to build a community around us of people who really believe in what we’re trying to achieve ! That way when we go live, we stand a much greater chance of reaching that target.
So here’s what we’re saying about the project on our Crowdfunder page:
Who am I? Hi I’m Gemma and it’s fair to say I’m kind of obsessed with weddings and after running a successful event hire company in rural Cornwall for the past 4 years where we’ve supplied over 350 weddings, I’d say this is an industry I really know and understand.
So what’s the idea? Imagine Airbnb for wedding venues and you’ll start to get the idea. Space&Rock follows a similar ethos, providing an uber cool online platform designed to connect home and business owners who have incredible spaces, with couples searching for hidden gem venues that can be personalised for their celebrations. Think haybarns, woodlands, crumbling castles, country houses, boathouses, warehouses, art galleries, coastal fields, breweries and glasshouses. Spaces that will really rock!!
How do I know there’s a gap in the market for Space&Rock? Because no one is doing this in the UK yet and there’s massive demand from couples for someone to step up and do it!
Anyone who works in the wedding industry will tell you, we are always being asked by clients, family and friends if we know of anywhere for a wedding that’s a bit different! I see the same questions being asked on wedding forums, facebook pages etc. More and more couples want something that’s outside the box and they have budgets to spend. A licenced wedding venue offers them convenience, but not always their dream space. Space owners are sitting on potentially a really great addition to their annual income and they don’t even realise it! It’s win win!
Now lets be clear, there are similar concepts to Space&Rock in other parts of the world, but not in the UK. Those few UK businesses who do offer space for hire, do so only in the biggest cities like London and Manchester and are catering more for the corporate market, not weddings.
Why do I feel so strongly about Space&Rock? I live and work in a rural location where it looks completely beautiful, but making a living is tough! Diversification for extra income is necessary for so many to survive. Struggling farmers open farm shops or convert barns into holiday accommodation, home owners with big gardens open for tours and cream teas. So, when I’m asked if I know of anywhere a bit different for a wedding, I would love it if I could say ‘Yes!’ not only because it helps couples find their perfect space, but also give those individuals who need their property to provide them with an income, an extra much needed financial boost.
How would the website work? Space&Rock already has web designers waiting in the wings to build it. The concept is for a large, national (UK) website, with a really eye catching, fresh, inspiring look.
In the same way Airbnb hosts have total control of their listing, the same will be applied to Space&Rock. Space owners have their own log in, can upload their own images and text, they have total control over their listing. Listings are free, and when a booking is made 15% of the total space hire fee is payable to Space&Rock. Couples searching for bespoke amazing spaces for their wedding, can search via the Space&Rock website using a wide search criteria and connect with the venues listed.
As a secondary feature, suppliers such as marquee companies, photographers, florists and stylists who will help couples rock their space (!!!) can list on the platform for a fee, and connect themselves with spaces – so for example a couple can look at a listing for a warehouse and see which suppliers have previously worked at that particular space, making supplier searches much easier for couples.
But can anyone just host a wedding at their space? Yes! Any wedding ceremony performed in your space won’t be legal unless you have been approved for civil ceremonies by the local authority, but couples searching for space using Space&Rock would usually have a church wedding or use a celebrant to perform their vows and do the legal bit later at their local registry office!
Space&Rock has huge potential but it won’t happen without your support. The website has to be brilliant! Exceptional design costs money. With your support this platform could really evolve the UK wedding industry for the better, and be a huge financial boost to space owners. So please do get involved!
